More Underrated Spots in NYC
By Sabastian Jimenez
Previously, I wrote about some underrated spots to eat in NYC, including my favorite chicken sandwich, ramen, and pizza places. In addition to these places, I’ll showcase some other locations to enjoy alternatives to what you’ll find in chain restaurants.
Electric Burrito
Electric Burrito, located in St. Marks in Lower Manhattan, creates a super delicious shrimp burrito packed full of rice, beans, crema, and succulent shrimp. The burrito was as big as my head! They create other options with carne asada, chicken, and tacos that have a spectacular spicy sauce to accompany them.
At a relatively cheap price of around 10-15 dollars, it is an alternative to Chipotle which recently seems to have shrunken their burritos.
JK Bakery
The best bagels I've ever had come from this small bakery in Flushing, Queens near my home. At $1.50, these bagels have a crunchy exterior yet are super soft on the inside. Whether it's a sesame bagel with butter or plain bagel with cream cheese—you can’t go wrong with any combination! - And for regular customers like me and my family, the kind Korean owners even occasionally offer us extra bagels!
At a cheap price and the freshest, delicious bagels you’ll ever try, this place will make you forget about Dunkin Donuts!
Dim Sum
Although not a restaurant, this cuisine is a must-try Chinese feast. Dim Sum is a type of dining where freshly steamed foods are served in bamboo steamers that are pushed around from table to table by women with carts. My favorite dishes are Shumai, Har gow, and shrimp cheung fun (or rice noodle rolls). - It is customary to drink tea along with the meal and my family always goes when we celebrate Chinese New Year!
The best place to get Dim Sum is in Flushing, Queens where the food is most authentic. The price for Dim Sum is not expensive and you can eat as much as you want. To end your meal, you must try a coconut cream bun!
