Coqui the Chef
An Authentic Spanish Cooking Experience
By Julie Worthington, Reporter
Coqui the Chef is a culinary business that reaches out to customers that want to learn the art of Puerto Rican cooking. But the cooking classes never would have come about in NYC without the inspiration owner Tania Lopez got from her grandmother back on the Caribbean island.
Her abuelita, Spanish for grandmother, was a big fan of making dishes like paella. Lopez grew up in awe while eating these classics.
" Her memory lives on in all tht I do with my company," Lopez said.
Lopez said the best part of Puerto Rican cooking is the Caribbean feel you get from making her dishes.
"Cooking with fruit, root vegetables, fish like bacallao, and drinking tropical drinks is almost nostalgic," Lopez said.
Lopez also has a mission here in the city.
"I want to show NYers how food music and tradition can help people to understand cultures, traditions, appreciation and awareness."
During her classes, she has flamenco dancers perform along with Spanish music.
